How can we help you?

Q1. Do I need food hygiene training to work with food?

Yes, the law states that ‘food handlers are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activity’.

Our food hygiene certificate will prove that the learning outcomes of the CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety have been met. This is considered to be the minimum requirement for those working with open food unsupervised in the hospitality industry. Proof of this, combined with on-the-job training in your company’s particular food hygiene controls, will ensure the law is complied with.

Q2. Do food hygiene certificates have to be accredited?

No – and any provider can call their food hygiene certificate a Level 2 Award. We believe that the standard of all food hygiene online courses should be independently checked by a regulatory body with expertise in food hygiene. This will give companies confidence that the information is correct and the method of learning effective.

Cheap on-line courses are not good value for money unless they engage learners and influence their behaviour once back in the workplace.

We chose the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) to review our food hygiene training game. The CIEH are the professional body for environmental health practitioners and one of the UK’s leading awarding bodies for food hygiene certificates.

A Game to Train Food Safety has been awarded CIEH Assured Status and the CIEH has confirmed that:

  • it enables training candidates to be compliant with current legislation and best practice
  • the quality and structure of the training enables candidates to achieve the learning objectives of the CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety
  • the examination component robustly tests the candidates knowledge

Q3. Will an (EHO) Environmental Health Officer accept my food hygiene certificate?

Yes, our food hygiene training game has been reviewed by EHOs at MKDC (Milton Keynes District Council).

We have a Primary Authority Co-ordinating Partnership with MKDC which means that EHOs throughout the UK must not contradict their assured advice. In effect, this means that as they have reviewed our food hygiene certificate, your EHO will not be able to require a different course. You will still need to make sure though that your team members are aware of the particular food hygiene controls in place in your operation.

If you want to take advantage of this legal protection, let us know and we will arrange a free ‘opt in’ for your company.

Q4. Are food hygiene certificates suitable for all of the food industry?

No, our food hygiene certificate has been designed for workers in the catering and hospitality industry. Although food hygiene principles do not change, the game does not reflect a retail store or a manufacturing operation and cannot therefore demonstrate the best food hygiene practices.

Q5. How do I start my game-based training?

  1. Once payment has been made, you will receive a ‘game code’ along with a weblink.
  2. Open the weblink on any device that you would like to download the game on to and follow the instructions. Tablets (IoS or Android) are best but it can also be played on desktops, laptops and smartphones. Once signed up, you can switch between devices and continue from where you left off.
  3. Once downloaded click on ‘LOGIN/SIGN UP’ button and then click on ‘SIGN UP’ and enter your name, date of birth, e-mail address and the game code you were given. You will also be asked to create and confirm a password. If the game has already been downloaded onto a shared device, press logout (if button showing) and then follow the same procedure as just described.
  4. Once you have signed up, you will be given a username. Keep a note of this and your password in a safe place as you will need it when you need to login on this or another device and when you want to download your certificate.
  5. Press play and you’re ready to go!

Q6. How long can I take to complete the game?

Once you have registered the game code that you have been given you will have 60 days to complete the game.

We recommend that you complete each stage plenty of times over several days to try to achieve a ‘distinction’ food hygiene certificate. This will also help to embed the knowledge you will need to pass the ‘Final Challenge’.

Once you have taken the ‘Final Challenge’ you will no longer be able to play the game but you will be able to log back in at any time to download your certificate from the ‘Options’ menu.

If you have bought multiple game codes for your team these will only expire 60 days after they have registered their game code in the game. Once the team member has registered, this time period cannot be extended or the game code passed to another team member.

Q7. What if I forget my username or password?

Click on the ‘LOGIN/SIGNUP’ on the home page and click ‘forgotten login details’. These will be sent to the e-mail address that was used when you signed up to the game.

Q8. What is the best way to revise before I take the test?

You should complete each stage again before you take the Final Challenge. You will be getting quicker each time you play a stage and this should not take too long. You should also read through the ‘key facts’ which summarise the main points.

Q9. What if I fail the test?

You cannot re-take the Final Challenge unless you pay for and/or obtain another Game Code and re-register.

Q10. When will I get my food hygiene certificate?

Your food hygiene certificate can be downloaded and printed as soon as you have successfully completed the Final Challenge. We will also e-mail you a copy of the certificate (so make sure that you entered your e-mail details correctly). It is a good idea to save a copy of the pdf certificate on your computer.

Q11. What if I lose my food hygiene certificate?

You just need to log back into the game using your username and password and you can download and print another certificate.
